Yahoo! Middle East Online Awards 2004

Dr. Omar bin Sulaiman, CEO of Dubai Internet City presented the 1st Yahoo! Middle East Online Awards to the most proactive online advertisers and agencies from the Middle East on Monday, May 3, 2004 . The awards are in recognition of the contribution made by advertisers and agencies to the growth of online advertising in the Middle East .

The awards were given to companies from different sectors - Oracle Middle East for Information Technology, General Motors Middle East for Automotive and Nokia for Telecommunications. In the airlines category, Saudi Arabian Airlines received the award for Best Regional Online Marketing while Emirates Airlines for Most Proactive Airline with worldwide campaigns.  Agencies receiving awards for their active online divisions were Focus Euro RSCG from Saudi Arabia , Impact Proximity Dubai and Starcom MediaVest Group, Dubai .

Alessandro Pegoraro, Managing Director of Yahoo! Italia, Eastern Europe , Middle East and Africa spoke about the growth of the internet worldwide and the dominating presence of Yahoo!  Vittorio Lorenzoni, Commercial Director of Yahoo! Italia, Eastern Europe , Middle East and Africa displayed examples of new, rich-media technology.

“Yahoo! users in the Middle East North Africa region have grown from 1.4 million in 2000 to more than 8.5 million in 2004,” said Dr. Irfan Ahmad, Director of Yahoo! Middle East Ad Sales Rep Office, Dubai . More than 80 advertisers are now using Yahoo! for their promotions. However, the online advertising market is still limited and gets under 0.5% of the advertising budget spent by Middle East advertisers.

Yahoo! has more than 800,000 users in the UAE and almost 900,000 in Saudi Arabia . These users view almost 5 million pages of Yahoo! daily from each country.

The Yahoo! Middle East Ad Sales Rep Office was established in Dubai Internet City in 2000. Yahoo! has the largest share of online advertising from the region and is also the dominant portal in terms of visitors.

The Middle East Online Awards have been initiated by Yahoo! to recognize those advertisers and agencies who have, over the years, invested in online marketing not only on Yahoo! but have also supported regional online websites. The awards are not for any particular campaign or creative excellence but in recognition and appreciation of the commitment made by the organizations in nurturing online advertising in the Middle East . Yahoo!’s management was responsible for selecting the winners.

 IRAN BIGGEST USER OF INTERNET IN REGION

Internet usage in Iran is expanding rapidly. In December 2002 there were 1.3 million users from Iran who generated more than 170 million pages of Yahoo! In May 2004 this number increased to 2.6 million unique users. 

 An internet savvy population is a prime target for selling computers, mobile phones and electronic appliances. Marketers can reach 2.6 million consumers by targeting their banners to appear when people from Iran visit Yahoo!
